Extravagant Worship

We worship not to get us in the mood. We worship as a response to who God is. Worship is an act or our will.

Mark 14:3-9 says: While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. 4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, "Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year's wages and the money given to the poor." And they rebuked her harshly. 6 "Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. 9 I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."

This woman did not hesitate to give the very best to God as an extravagant act of worship in response to who God is. Often we are casual towards God because we don’t grasp who God is --- His greatness, His majesty, His forgiveness, His grace, His love, His compassion towards us.

Too often I give God the left-overs. I wait until the end of the day to pray when I’m tired, then I pray quickly so I can go to bed. I don’t spend time in God’s Word until I have all the other stuff done. I don’t give my best to God.

I’m challenged to give my best to God in extravagant worship of Him in response to who He is. I need recognize my own sin and how much God loves me and forgives me. I desire to spend extended time in prayer with Him; to spend the best time of day with Him before I’m tired; to give generously financially.
